Debbie, Nice to tumble into your [b]old space here at last and remember those early days when the internet scarcely made sense. I want to exclaim over your first logo. It's brilliant! I love what you say about exclamation points, too. Trying a sentence with and without one is like trying on garden duds and a shirt from Liberace's closet and checking them both at the mirror. Liberace knew his business.
Tara, I wish I knew where the file was for the inkwell / computer logo! It would work perfectly for many of us here on Substack: old-fashioned good writing paired with an effective digital platform.
Debbie, really enjoyed this. You have been engaged in internet activities since the early days. I almost used an exclamation point but realized it was superfluous. I edit my articles pretty extensively but my comments sometimes go a little crazy.
omg yes... apostrophe's! And random CAPs! And what about the Oxford comma? And my biggest pet peeve of all: the use of "I" instead of "me," when it's supposed to be "me" because it's the object in the sentence. "He sat Muriel and I down to give us a lecture on proper grammar... " No!!! it's "Muriel and me." I've been thinking about writing a whole article about this. I've been seeing it everywhere. You?
Here’s a legit question: a Substack writer-editor collective whereby we can hire each other to do things we are weaker at. I’m an editor who writes and would happily pay for editing when I’m in writer mode. I know the value of good editing so it would be a load off my mind. Maybe others would agree?
Debbie, I can so relate to this post! (exclamation point intentional 😉). I can still hear the sound of the slow dial-up to the internet. You’re right; I don’t think we called it surfing back then. And here in Canada, we paid by the time usage so I didn’t spend nearly as much time on it as you did. And although I don’t have your coding skills, I still type at 125 wpm and have embraced technology, which has been essential as an indie writer. I think we’re doing well for a couple of [b]old gals! Great post; thank you 😊
K.R., I agree. Oh I do remember that dial-up sound! I loved the 1998 movie "You've Got Mail" with Meg Ryan, Tom Hanks, and Greg Kinnear. So many memories...
omg I just realized the links to the interior pages on my 1996 website (I coded it myself) still work… https://web.archive.org/web/19961207025441/http://www.wordbiz.com/

Lovely piece Debbie. :)
Thank you Fred. This makes my day!
Next up Lets talk About Indescriminate Capitalization and maybe apostrophe’s!!!
