“A brilliant exploration of the writer's accumulated wisdom, dogged curiosity, and breathtaking honesty.” — The Boston Globe on Still Life at Eighty by
I am so excited to offer the No-Guilt [B]old Women Book Club, a lively reading + discussion group where we’ll read memoirs written by very well-known, very [b]old women authors1 and, whenever possible, enjoy live chats with the authors themselves. (Though just to be clear, you don’t have to be a [b]old woman to join—all are welcome.) We’ll be reading and discussing a new book every couple of months, then meeting LIVE via Zoom. But this is a NO-GUILT club; if you aren’t able to finish the book, come anyway!
Our themes for discussion may sound familiar if you’ve been reading this newsletter for a while: they’ll include grief, identity, reinvention, creativity, gratitude, and mortality. Excitingly, we’ll also use this book club to discuss writing and craft, as it relates to book-length memoirs as well as personal essays—the kind so many of us are writing, and reading, on Substack!
First Book: Still Life at Eighty: The Next Interesting Thing, by Abigail Thomas.
Special Guest: A live discussion with Abigail Thomas herself, hosted by yours truly and made even more compelling by your live questions and comments.
Date & Time: Tuesday July 29th, from 11am to 12:15pm ET (8am PT, 4pm GMT+1).
How to Join: All paid [B]old Agers will receive a Zoom link via email before the first gathering on July 29th2. If you’re not already a paid member of [B]old Age, upgrade here for just $40/yr to join the discussion.
I’ve been wanting to introduce readers to [b]old women memoirists, to learn from them, and to talk about their writing and their lives, so I’m thrilled to launch this Book Club and discussion group. I look forward to seeing everyone in exactly two weeks!
📚 Want to wave or say hi?
As always, I’d love to hear from you. - Debbie
Future books and authors TBD. Examples of other authors we might read include Diane Athill, Joan Didion, Roxane Gay, Vivian Gornick, and Anne Lamott. Book Club members will have a say in our selection.
A replay will be available to paid subscribers.
I'm thrilled about this, Debbie! can't wait to get Abigail's book and join the discussion in a couple weeks!
