MARY! Thank you! Every time I read one of your essays, many thoughts go through my head. I marvel at your facility with words and emotion, your thoughtfulness at every choice you make, the raw and yet controlled way you tell a story, and I think to myself, goddess, I wish I could write like Mary. Every single time. I love you so much, too! xoxo

Wow, Debbie. What a thrill to find myself on your honor roll, with a ringing endorsement of my book, alongside wonderful writers I admire and will soon discover. When someone creates a list of Substack’s great community builders, you will be on it.

Thank you for the midlife mention, Debbie! I turn 50 this spring, which feels...different, somehow. So inspiring and expansive to read through this list!

Oh, and I adore Valerie Monroe, who just turned 74. Her publication was one of my first paid subscriptions on Substack and I never miss an issue: https://valeriemonroe.substack.com/

Dana, thank you again! ... now to become a paid sub of Valerie's... and interest her in doing a [B]old Woman Q&A!

Valerie is fantastic! She knows everything I always wanted to know about skincare. If she doesn’t know it, she knows who to ask. She’s also open to reader questions/suggested comments. I wanted to know how older women with tattoos felt about their tattoos years later. She delivered!

Hi Debbie,

I'm sill relatively new here, but one thing I LOVE about Substack is discovering so many "older" women who are fantastic writers. This is so encouraging and certainly builds up my confidence. Such validation - and who doesn't need that? I am familiar with a few you included and will check out the others. Since I'm 69, I would love to someday make your list! Thank you for putting this one together. x

Debbie, thank you! I am deeply honored to be included in this list of amazing writers. I LOVE this picture of you and Hilma and that you braved the elements to talk for an hour and a half.

One of the things I've enjoyed most about being here on Substack has been the inspiration I've received from other women, especially those who are older than me. My soul has been craving a different model of engaging with life as I age, something different than the one I saw in my own family and I have found that here.

As well as the great women you've mentioned here I am a fan of Janice Walton and Ramona Grigg, both of them have been through a lot and have inspired me to live more fully.

Donna, Janice and Ramona are right at the top of the “more” list!

Thanks so much, Debbie. I wrote to you personally, but forgot I should thank you here and thank you for the names of so many excellent other older women writers, many of whom I already subscribe to. I see old ladies, striding arm in arm, with chins well up, along a grand boulevard - perhaps the Champs Elysees. What an impressive sight that would be!

And people in my neck of the woods have been known to refer to me as "The Mayor." Which I think is hilarious because I think of myself as a hermit most of the time. xo
