“Sharply personal and impeccably detailed”— Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“[A] fiery manifesto of a memoir.”— The New York Times

Pathological: the True Story of Six Misdiagnoses by Sarah Fay (Harper Collins 2023)

At 53,

Sarah Fay
is not technically “old” (at least from my vantage point of two decades older), but she’s extremely [b]old. She’s lived several lifetimes through her struggles with mental illness, and, against all odds, has fought through to recovery—and far beyond. Today, she’s a highly-regarded Substack consultant and strategist who’s helped thousands of writers succeed through her Substack Writers@Work programs. She also teaches writing at Northwestern University, writes for the New York Times, and more.

At 12 years old, Sarah was diagnosed with anorexia; the years went by and the diagnoses piled up: major depressive disorder, anxiety disorder, ADHD, OCD, and bipolar disorder (that’s six, if you’re counting).

Sarah details all of this and more in her compelling memoir, Pathological: the True Story of Six Misdiagnoses, our November Book Club read.
